jaKatakana

As we mentioned in Japanese Lesson 1, Katakana alphabets are mainly used for foreign language words such as names and words that have been borrowed from other languages such as "compu-taa" (computer). The Japanese language does not have as many sounds as the English language so, when creating a name in Katakana for instance, the name must be sound out to the closest Japanese equivalent.
All Katakana alphabets are divided into three groups. Shown below are three katakana charts for 3 katakana groups. Please note that 3rd katakana group (i.e. 3rd Katakana Chart) is made of combination letters.

Japanese language also consists of Chinese characters called Kanji, which we will discuss later, and another japanese alphabet set called katakana, which is used for foreign language words. Katakana will be covered in the next lesson.

There are 5 vowels in the Japanese language:
[ a ] pronounced as "aa"
[ i ] pronounced as "ee" or as "e" in "eat"
[ u ] pronounced as "oo" in "soon"
[ e ] pronounced as "e" in "elk"
[ o ] pronounced as "o" in "more"
All Hiragana characters end with one of these vowels, with the exception of [ n ]. The only "consanent" that does not resemble that of English is the Japanese "r". It is slightly "rolled" as if it were a combination of a "d", "r", and "l".

Hiraganas are divided into three groups. Shown below are three hiragana charts for 3 hiragana groups. Please note that 3rd hiragana group (3rd Hiranaga Chart) is made of combination letters.

Exceptions:

[ha] is pronounced "wa" when it is immediately follows the subject. It is usually only pronounced "ha" when it is a part of a word.

[he] is pronounced "e" when it immediately follows a place or direction. Both of these are very simple to detect

IELTS essay

People work because they need money to live. What are some other reasons that people work? Discuss one or more of these reasons. Use specific examples and details to support your answer.

I think there are two types of people. The first type is people who work for money, another type is people who work for self-realization. I state my position on the following points.

First of all, people who work for self-realization like their job. Money is not important for them, they need satisfaction. I believe that this kind of people makes our evolution and history. They aspire after new inventions and discoveries overcoming all obstacles on their ways. I think that these people are very interesting because they know a lot, read many books and have their own life experience. Of course they need money for some essential needs such as food and cloth, but they do not need them for luxury houses or expensive furnishings. Many scientists are people who devote their lives to new knowledge and discoveries.

Second of all, I believe that people need self-realization. It gives them opportunity to contribute in world's history and share their knowledge and experience with other people. I think it helps them to realize that they are needed by humankind and will not be forgotten. This is priceless.

To sum up, I think that people's aspiration after self-realization is the main reason why we have now good medicine, different means of communications, many devices to make our lives easier, etc.

Some people spend their entire lives in one place. Others move a number of times throughout their lives, looking for a better job, house, community, or even climate. Which do you prefer: staying in one place or moving in search of another place? Use reasons and specific examples to support your opinion.

It seems like world is becoming smaller and smaller almost by the minutes. When I was a child I could not imagine to meet someone from another part of the planet. However, now I have a few friends from Africa, I can meet many Chinese people on the streets, have dinner at a Mexican restaurant, buy some delicious cookies at a cafe run by the French. It is really wonderful and amazing to see people from all over the world, communicate and work with them. I agree with those people who move a number of times throughout their lives. However, I believe that people who spend their entire lives in one place have many advantages too. First of all, I will focus on the reasons why I support the idea about moving and then I will move on to analyzing the opportunities that people have staying at one place.

Personally, I think that the first and most obvious reason to move from one place to another is to see the world. Of cause, this can be obtained by traveling. Nevertheless, traveling does not give the opportunity to immersed into traditions, customs and just the way of life of the country. It is like seeing beautiful looking boots on a show-window and does not try them on to see if they are comfortable.

The second reason for moving is the opportunity to gain new experience and knowledge. One can meet new people and new friends, extend one's range on interests. Also, one can find a better job, life conditions and even climate. For example, my husband like warm and sunny weather. So his dream is to live here in Texas a half of the year and move to Australia for another half of the year to catch warm months. One more example, my aunt does not feel good in sultry and humid weather. So she had to move several times to find a place where she feels comfortable.

From the other side, this way of life has some disadvantages. For instance, it is difficult to make a good career if one is constantly moving. Of cause, it does not concern celebrities on their tours. Also, it is not good for children because they will have to change their schools a few times.

Staying in one place has a plenty of advantages too. I must confess that I am closer to the people who do not move much. I prefer to have a permanent home with my old and favorite things, have a dog and a beautiful view from the window.

In conclusion, I think that every person is always looking for something better than he already has. So, if people live in one place through their entire lives it means that they are looking for something else.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? There is nothing that young people can teach older people. Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.

I have to totally disagree with the statement that there is nothing that young people can teach older people. For several reasons, which I will mention bellow, I think that young people can teach older people many things.

First of all, young people intend to learn new things faster. They faster learn new technologies. Second of all, young people are more motivated. They aspire to succeed and make a good career, which requires good knowledge and experience. So, they try to get more knowledge and experience from different sources like Internet, books, newspaper, magazines and of cause from conversations with other people. In addition to this young people bring many fresh ideas to the team they are working in. For example, when my friend was hired as a software developer he surprised everybody with his energy, a bunch of new and fresh ideas about what could be done to improve the process. He was the youngest person in the team but everybody listened to him and it was like a fresh air, an impulse, which made everyone work harder.

Finally, young people often know more about new technologies. For example, my husband is 26 years old and he is a good professional in software development. So, he is often asked to read a lecture for different companies and audience. Needless to say, the majority of people who attend those lectures are older than my husband.

To sum up, I think that young people have many things to teach older people. Moreover, I think that people from every generation have something to learn from each other. People learn trough their entire lives from books that hold the experience and the history of previous generations as well as from their own experience and experience of the younger people.

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? With the help of technology, students nowadays can learn more information and learn it more quickly. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

From my everyday experience and observation I can state several factors, which defend the statement that with the help of technology, students nowadays can learn more information and learn it more quickly.

First of all, the latest inventions of humankind dramatically improved our life. Nowadays we can move from one place to another more quickly, we do not spend much time cooking, we have many different recourses of information and means of communication. So, our life now is more dynamic and changeable. During our day we receive a huge amount of information and process it. Students at the same time have more resources to get information they need. They can go to a library, the nearest bookstore, or borrow it from a friend or even download it from an Internet. I think It is great. Instead of waiting for one's turn to get a book in a library, one can print it from a file downloaded earlier. The great thing about it that one can print only those pages he is interested in and also make marks on the pages to mark important ideas.

Another important aspect of this is the advantages of using computer the greatest invention of the last century. Students do not have to spend their time by writing and re-writing many papers. It is really time-consuming. They just type information in and may use many useful features such as "copy", "past", "delete", "save", etc. Also, sometimes students do not have to write down lectures because they already have them on their computers.

Internet plays an important role in our life now. We can communicate with the people who are on another part of the planet. We also can get the latest news very quickly. People can ask for a piece of advice or find different kinds of information on the Internet. Students can get their degree on-line, register for classes, communicate with professors, take tests and even listen to a lecture.
I think the great part in it that students may more effectively arrange their time. They can get their task by e-mail and stay home to do it. It really saves time and make studying more fun especially if a person has to work in order to pay his or her tuition.

To summarize, I think that many last inventions improved students' life and allowed them to concentrate more on studying.

People remember special gifts or presents that they have received. Why? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Receiving gifts is always very exciting. I think that all people like to receive presents from their relatives, friends, co-workers, etc. Personally, I am sure that a person does not remember all gifts he has received because it is impossible. However, I know that all people remember a few gifts that were special. Why people remember those special gifts?

First of all, I believe that people remember special gifts because they were from very close and dear people. For example, I remember my parents presented me a ring when I was sixteen years old. It was not an expensive ring but it was very valuable for me and when I left my home and moved to another city I often looked at that ring and felt like my parents were somewhere near me. I felt their support and understanding. It is like people who are close to us give their small parts of their sole with that gift. They want us to remember them and they want to make us happy. These gifts are very valuable for people of all countries and nationalities.

Another reason why people remember special gifts because they were exactly what people wanted to have for a long time, but for some reasons, for example, they just could not afford those things, they did not buy them. So, when they receive those things as gifts it makes them very happy and they remember those moments for a long time. When I was a child my mother could not buy me a bicycle because we did not have enough money at that time. So, when my grandfather bought me my first bicycle it was the happiest moment in my life. Moreover, he personally taught me how to ride and I spent all my spare time after that event cycling.

To sum up, I think that people remember special gifts because they presented with love

HARRY POTTER and THE DEADLY HALLOWS

Can you believe just one thing but a very important thing that I'm going to tell you now. I 'm having the seventh HARRY POTTER AND THE DEADLY HALLOWS on my arm. One of my friend has promised to lend it for me when her friend finishes it. I'M SO HAPPY .I'M SO LUCKY. Anyway I know that not everyone has the same lucky as me so I may give you some hints about Harry Potter VII now.........

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series of novels written by British author J. K. Rowling. The book was released on July 21, 2007, bringing to a close the series that started with the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone 10 years previously in 1997. This last book chronicles the events directly following the previous book in the series, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2005), leading to the long-awaited final struggle between Harry Potter and his allies, and the ever-more-powerful and influential Lord Voldemort and his servants, the Death Eaters.
Deathly Hallows is published in the UK by Bloomsbury Publishing, in the USA by Scholastic Press, and in Canada by Raincoast Books. It was released globally in 93 countries. The book broke sales records becoming the fastest-selling book ever, selling more than eleven million copies in the first twenty-four hours following its release. The previous record, nine million in its first day, had been held by Half-Blood Prince.[1]
Before settling on "Deathly Hallows" as the title, Rowling also considered the titles "Harry Potter and the Elder Wand" and "Harry Potter and the Peverell Quest".

Epigraph

All the books in the Harry Potter series have dedications, but Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the only book in the series to also have an epigraph. The epigraph consists of two quotes on the themes of death and friendship. The first quotation is a translation of a passage from The Libation Bearers by the 5th century BC Ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus.[3] The second quotation is from the work More Fruits of Solitude (1682) by William Penn, the Quaker author and founder of Pennsylvania.[4]

Plot

Leaving the Dursleys

The book opens with Lord Voldemort and his followers plotting to ambush Harry Potter, who is about to leave Privet Drive for the last time. Shortly before his protection at the Dursleys' home expires on his 17th birthday, the Order of the Phoenix move Harry and the Dursleys to separate safe locations. Before leaving, Dudley uncharacteristically expresses his gratitude to Harry for saving him from the Dementors.[HP5] Order members escort Harry, but despite using six Harry-lookalike decoys, the real Harry is identified en route and ambushed by Voldemort and his Death Eaters. Harry and the others narrowly escape to The Burrow, although Hedwig and Mad-Eye Moody are killed, and George Weasley's ear is severed by a glancing spell.
A few days later, the Minister of Magic, Rufus Scrimgeour arrives to give Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger bequests from Albus Dumbledore's will: Ron is given Dumbledore's Deluminator, Hermione receives a book of fairy tales, and Harry inherits Godric Gryffindor's sword and the Snitch he caught in his first ever Quidditch match. The sword is withheld, however; Scrimgeour claims it is a historical artefact belonging to the Ministry.

Search for the Horcruxes

During Bill Weasley and Fleur Delacour's wedding reception, Kingsley Shacklebolt sends a Patronus warning that, "The Ministry has fallen. Scrimgeour is dead. They are coming." Death Eaters soon arrive. Harry, Ron, and Hermione escape by Disapparating and eventually take refuge at the deserted Black family home. While there, Harry notices that Sirius Black's late brother (and former Death Eater) Regulus has the same initials as the "R.A.B." who removed the locket Horcrux from the hidden sea cave.[HP6] Hermione recalls once seeing a locket at Grimmauld Place, and Harry sends Kreacher the House Elf to fetch Mundungus Fletcher, who admits he stole the locket and bribed Dolores Umbridge with it. Positive this is the Horcrux, they infiltrate the Ministry of Magic using Polyjuice Potion. They escape with the locket but are unable to destroy it.
When their hiding place at Grimmauld Place is discovered, the trio go on the run. After several months, they overhear that Gryffindor's sword has been secured in Bellatrix Lestrange's vault at Gringotts Bank, although the Ministry is unaware it is a replica; the real sword's whereabouts is unknown. Harry knows the sword can destroy Horcruxes and wants to search for it. Emotionally affected by carrying the locket, Ron fears for his family's safety and is frustrated that Harry has no real plan for finding either the sword or the Horcruxes and decides to leave. Harry and Hermione go to Godric's Hollow, hoping that Dumbledore hid the sword there. However, they are ambushed by Voldemort and his snake Nagini. During their escape, Hermione accidentally breaks Harry's wand.
One night, a doe-shaped Patronus appears near their camp and leads Harry to Gryffindor's real sword. As Harry tries to retrieve it from an icy pond, the locket Horcrux tightens around his neck, nearly strangling him. Aided by the Deluminator, Ron returns and rescues Harry and destroys the Horcrux with the sword. Ron warns them that Voldemort's name is now 'tabooed': anyone uttering breaks any magic protecting their location.

The Deathly Hallows

The trio go to Xenophilius Lovegood, Luna's father, to ask him about a symbol they have encountered several times. He tells them it represents the Deathly Hallows, three legendary objects that conquer death: the Elder Wand, Resurrection Stone, and Invisibility Cloak. Harry is convinced that his Invisibility Cloak is one of the Hallows. When the trio become suspicious about Luna's absense, Lovegood admits she was abducted by Death Eaters. Hoping she will be returned if he cooperates, he has alerted the Ministry that the trio are there, but they escape just as Death Eaters arrive.
Snatchers capture the trio at their camp after Harry inadvertently speaks Voldemort's name. They are imprisoned at Malfoy Manor, along with Luna Lovegood, Dean Thomas, Ollivander the wandmaker, and Griphook the goblin. Finding the sword among the trio's possessions, Bellatrix Lestrange suspects they have broken into her vault at Gringrotts Bank and tortures Hermione for information. Dobby apparates into the cellar to rescue the prisoners. Peter Pettigrew enters to investigate the noise. As Ron and Harry attack him, Pettrigrew chokes Harry. When Harry demands he repay his life debt,[HP3] Pettigrew loosens his grip, but is then murdered by his own silver hand in retribution. Harry and Ron rush upstairs to rescue Hermione, and Harry captures Bellatrix and Draco's wands. The group escapes by apparating with Dobby to Shell Cottage, Bill and Fleur Weasley's home, but Dobby has been fatally stabbed by Bellatrix.
While at the cottage, Ollivander confirms the Elder Wand's existence and says that wands can change their allegiance if the previous owners are defeated or disarmed. The trio plot with Griphook to infiltrate Gringotts, convinced another Horcrux is hidden in the Lestrange vault. Disguised with Polyjuice potion and aided by Griphook, the trio gain entry into the vault and retrieve Helga Hufflepuff's cup Horcrux; Griphook takes the sword, and the trio barely escape with the Cup. Voldemort now realises that his Horcruxes are being destroyed, and through his mental link with Harry, he unintentionally reveals that one is hidden at Hogwarts. Harry soon learns that Ravenclaw's Diadem is the Horcrux

The Battle of Hogwarts

The trio arrive in Hogsmeade. Aberforth Dumbledore, Albus' brother, helps them secretly enter Hogwarts. Harry alerts the staff to Voldemort's impending invasion. The Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore's Army, and former Hogwarts students arrive as Voldemort's forces attack; as the fierce battle ensues, casualties mount, including Fred Weasley, Remus Lupin, Tonks and Colin Creevey. Harry remembers seeing the Diadem in the Room of Requirement and goes there to search for it. Meanwhile, Ron and Hermione enter the Chamber of Secrets to retrieve basilisk fangs to eliminate Horcruxes with; Hermione destroys Hufflepuff's Cup. In the Room of Requirement, the three are assaulted by Draco, Crabbe, and Goyle. But Crabbe mishandles the powerful Fiendfyre spell, killing himself and inadvertently destroying the Diadem.
Harry glimpses Voldemort's thoughts again. The trio sneak into the Shrieking Shack where they overhear Voldemort telling Snape that he believes Snape became the Elder Wand's master when he killed its former owner, Dumbledore.[HP6] Convinced that Snape's death will cause the wand's allegiance to pass to him, Voldemort orders Nagini to kill Snape, then leaves. As he is dying, Snape gives Harry his memories; they reveal that Snape was loyal to Dumbledore, motivated by his lifelong love for Harry's mother, Lily. Dumbledore, doomed to die after being cursed by Gaunt's ring Horcrux, had ordered Snape to kill him, if necessary, to spare Draco from fulfilling Voldemort's task. It was Snape who sent the doe Patronus to lead Harry to Gryffindor's sword. The memories also expose that Harry himself is a Horcrux; Voldemort cannot die while Harry lives.
Resigned to his fate, Harry goes alone to the Forbidden Forest where Voldemort awaits. The Snitch opens to reveal the Resurrection Stone. Harry summons the spirits of his parents, Sirius Black, and Remus Lupin, who provide comfort and accompany him Voldemort's camp. He then willingly allows Voldemort to strike him with the Avada Kedavra curse. Awakening in an otherworldly place, Harry is uncertain whether he is alive or dead. Albus Dumbledore appears and explains that, just as Voldemort cannot die while his soul fragment remains in Harry, Harry cannot be killed while his blood resides in Voldemort's body; however, Voldemort's soul fragment within Harry has been destroyed by the killing curse. Harry has the choice of "going on" or returning to the living world.
Harry revives, although he pretends to be dead and is carried to Hogwarts as a trophy by Voldemort's army. As the fighting breaks out again, Harry covers himself with the Invisibility Cloak. Neville pulls Gryffindor's sword from the Sorting Hat and beheads Nagini, destroying the final Horcrux. In the continuing battle, Molly Weasley fatally curses Bellatrix Lestrange to protect Ginny. As Harry and the Dark Lord confront one another, Harry knows that Voldemort does not command the Elder Wand. When Draco Malfoy disarmed Dumbledore on the Astronomy Tower, Draco unknowingly won the Elder Wand's allegiance; when Harry later captured Draco's own wand, he became the Elder Wand's new master. Voldemort casts Avada Kedavra as Harry simultaneously conjures Expelliarmus, but protecting its master, the Elder Wand rebounds Voldemort's curse, killing him.
After the battle, Harry visits Dumbledore's portrait. He tells the professor that he will keep the Invisibility Cloak, but to prevent anyone from reuniting the Deathly Hallows, the Resurrection Stone will be left where it was dropped in the Forbidden Forest, and the Elder Wand is to be returned to Dumbledore's tomb. If Harry dies undefeated, the Elder Wand's power will be extinguished with his death. Dumbledore nods his approval. Before placing the Elder Wand into the tomb, Harry uses it to repair his own wand.

Epilogue

Nineteen years later, Harry and Ginny Weasley have three children: James, Albus Severus and Lily. Ron and Hermione have two children named Rose and Hugo. The families meet at King's Cross station, where a nervous Albus is departing for his first year at Hogwarts. James is the eldest and already familiar with school while Lily will start in two years' time. Harry's nineteen-year-old godson, Teddy Lupin, is found kissing Victoire Weasley (Bill and Fleur's daughter) in a train compartment. Teddy is apparently very close to the Potters, with Harry remarking, "He already comes round for dinner about four times a week." Harry spots Draco Malfoy and his unnamed wife with their son Scorpius at the station; Malfoy acknowledges Harry with a curt nod, then turns away. Harry comforts Albus, who is worried he will be sorted into Slytherin, by telling him that his namesake, Severus Snape, was a Slytherin and probably the bravest man he ever met. Neville Longbottom is now the Hogwarts Herbology professor and is close friends with Harry. The book concludes with the words: "His scar had not hurt in nineteen years. All was well."

Marzipanned fruit cake

Preparation time less than 30 mins
Cooking time over 2 hours

Ingredients

This cake is a joy to make. Butter and sugar are beaten until fluffy, then eggs, citrus zest, fruits, flour, spices and ground almonds are beaten in. The mixture is baked until golden, then the cake wrapped and stored for decoration, fed from time to time with extra brandy. 100g/4oz crystallised pineapple 100g/4oz glacé cherries 50g/2oz crystallised ginger 175g/6oz candied peel, unchopped 200g/8oz sultanas 4 tbsp brandy or orange juice, plus extra brandy for feeding the cake once made 175g/6oz mixed shelled nuts such as brazils, almonds and hazelnuts 200g/8oz softened butter 200g/8oz golden caster sugar 4 eggs, beaten grated zest and juice of 1 orange 200g/8oz plain flour 5g/1tsp ground cinnamon 100g/4oz ground almonds you will need a deep 20cm/8in round cake tin

Method

1. Have ready a deep 20cm/8in round cake tin. Cut a double thickness strip of greaseproof paper: it should be 5cm/2in deeper than your cake tin and long enough to wrap round the tin with a slight overlap. Make a 2.5cm/1in crease along the long folded edge.

2. Cut out two rounds of greaseproof paper to fit the base of the tin (the easiest way to do this is to sit the tin on the double thickness paper and draw round with a pencil, then cut round the line).

3. Butter the base and sides of the tin and fit the long strip of paper around the inside. Put the rounds of paper in the base of the tin.

4. Pre-heat the oven to 150C/300F/Gas 2.

5. Chop the pineapple, quarter the cherries, chop the ginger and peel. Mix together all the fruit in a bowl and pour over the brandy or orange juice. Chop the nuts, but keep them separate.

6. In a large bowl, beat together the butter and sugar using a hand-held mixer or wooden spoon (about 3 minutes with a mixer or 5 minutes by hand) until light and fluffy.

7. Beat the eggs in a jug. Add to the creamed mixture a little at a time, beating after each addition. Do not worry if it curdles, this will not affect the cake.

8. Beat in the orange zest and juice, then add the soaked fruit and the liquid. Stir in the chopped nuts.

9. Set a sieve over the bowl. Tip the flour and cinnamon into the sieve and sift them into the bowl.

10. Tip in the ground almonds, then fold everything into the mixture using a large spoon or the mixer blades. There should be no traces of unmixed flour.

11. Spoon the cake mixture in to the prepared tin. Press down lightly and smooth the top with the back of a metal spoon.

12. Bake for 1 hour, then reduce to 140C/275F/Gas 1 and bake for 2-2½ hours until golden brown, firm to the touch and it has stopped singing (the hissing sound made during baking).

13. Feeding the cake with extra brandy after baking is a lovely old custom. Invert the cake when cold and make several holes in the base with a skewer. Spoon 30ml/2tbsp brandy over the holes so it soaks in. Re-wrap and feed at 1-2 weekly intervals until ready to ice.

Note:
To marzipan a cake, level the top of the cake by cutting if necessary and put upside down on the cakeboard. Pierce the cake a few times with a cocktail stick and drizzle with brandy. Heat apricot jam until boiling and spread around the sides and top of the cake. Dust your work surface with icing sugar and knead the marzipan until pliable. Roll out and cover the cake. Smooth into position and trim and neaten the base.

** S*T*U*D*Y* WITH ME **

In my country, nowaday, go on studying at university is not the only choice of many young. Yes, they can study abroad, study their subject,... with me, I may try to study abroad. If you have the same ambition as mine, let's us study together ^_^ I have many interesting essays. Do you want to see it ...

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? A zoo has no useful purpose. Use specific reasons and examples to explain your answer.

I think that the question about whether a zoo has no useful purpose is the one that is open for debate. It is a topical question nowadays. Some people believe that a zoo has an essential and cognitive purpose. However, other people believe that a zoo has no useful purpose and people should observe wild animals in their nature. Personally, I think that both options have their advantages. In the following paragraphs I will analyze these points and present my own view in favor of people who think that animals should not be kept in a zoo.

From the one side, a zoo has many benefits for people. First of all, children can learn about animals not only from books and TV programs but from actually watching them alive. They can see animals, touch them and even feed them. I think it is an amazing experience for a child. He gains more knowledge and experience from this "communication" with an animal. Second of all, a zoo is a perfect place for adults to see many animals that people are not able to see in their lives.

However, from the other side, I keep asking myself "What kind of benefits wild animals have from a zoo?". Unfortunately, I can not find any of them. I think that wild animals should live in their nature environment. Moreover, I think that we should observe them through TV programs sitting in our favorite chairs, or people who like danger should try to observe them in the native environment. I think that animals are not toys. I know that most zoos try to keep their animals in the environment which is close to their native, but they can not give them as much freedom as animals want to.

To sum up, I think that wild animals should not be kept in a zoo. Personally, I enjoy more watching "Discovery Channel" then watching a black bear who does not know where to hide from the scorching sun in a Texas zoo.

MY MUSIC IDOL

Today I suddendly remember a meaningful song of Hilary Duff. Can you guess it? The answer’s “SOMEONE’S WATCHING OVER ME” –yes , a very meaningful song. I become a fan of Hilary since I hear this song. If you hear it, you’ll love it like I do. Before, I’ll give you the lyric of this song. I’m sure you’ll like it right:

Someone's Watching over Me Lyrics
- Hilary Duff -

Found myself today
Oh I found myself and ran away
Something pulled me back
The voice of reason I forgot I had
All I know is just you're not here to say
What you always used to say
But it's written in the sky tonight

So I won't give up
No I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong
Even if it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
Someone's watching over me

Seen that ray of light
And it's shining on my destiny
Shining all the time
And I wont be afraid
To follow everywhere it's taking me
All I know is yesterday is gone
And right now I belong
Took this moment to my dreams

So I won't give up
No I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong
Even if it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
Someone's watching over me

It doesn't matter what people say
And it doesn't matter how long it takes
Believe in yourself and you'll fly high
And it only matters how true you are
Be true to yourself and follow your heart

So I won't give up
No I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong
Even if it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
That I won't give up
No I won't break down
Sooner than it seems life turns around
And I will be strong
Even when it all goes wrong
When I'm standing in the dark I'll still believe
That someone's watching over
Someone's watching over
Someone's watching over me

Someone's watching over me

Background information

Hilary Erhard Duff (born September 28, 1987) is an American actress, singer, songwriter, dancer, film and music producer, fashion designer, and spokesperson. She has an older sister, Haylie Duff, who is also an actress/singer.
After gaining fame for her starring role on the television show Lizzie McGuire, Duff went on to have a film career, and her most commercially successful pictures include Cheaper by the Dozen (2003), The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003), and A Cinderella Story (2004). She reportedly earned $15 million in 2005.[1] Duff has expanded her repertoire into pop music, with three RIAA certified-platinum albums and over thirteen million albums sold worldwide,[2] and she has launched a clothing line, Stuff by Hilary Duff, and an exclusive perfume with Elizabeth Arden.
Her upcoming films include the 2007 action thriller War, Inc. and animated comedy Foodfight!.[3] Duff's latest studio album, Dignity, was released in April 2007
Duff was born in Houston, Texas, the second child of Robert Erhard Duff, owner of a chain of convenience stores, and Susan Colleen (nee Cobb), a homemaker. Her middle name is the maiden name of her part German-American paternal grandmother, Mary Erhard; Duff also has German ancestry on the part of her maternal grandmother, Amy Beulah Schlemmer.[citation needed] After Duff's mother encouraged her to take an acting class alongside her older sister, Haylie Katherine Duff, both girls won parts in various local theater productions. At the ages of eight and six, respectively, the Duff sisters participated in the ballet The Nutcracker Suite with Columbus Ballet Met in San Antonio. The siblings became more enthusiastic about the idea of acting professionally, and eventually relocated to California with their mother. Bob Erhard Duff stayed at the family home in Houston to maintain their business.[4] After several years of auditions and meetings, the Duff sisters were cast in several television commercials

Early works

Most of Duff's first few acting roles were small, starting off with an uncredited appearance in Hallmark Entertainment's western miniseries True Women (1997). She also served as an extra, again uncredited, in writer-director Willard Carroll's ensemble dramedy Playing by Heart (1998). Her first major part was as the star of the 1998 film Casper Meets Wendy, playing the young witch Wendy, who encounters the animated character Casper. Like Casper: A Spirited Beginning (1997), the second sequel to the successful Casper (1995), the film was released direct-to-video with mostly unenthusiastic reviews.
Duff later appeared in a supporting role in the television film The Soul Collector (1999), which was based on a Kathleen Kane novel and starred Bruce Greenwood as an angel who helps out a female farmer (Melissa Gilbert) whose husband has recently died. Duff won a Young Artist Award for "Best Performance in a TV Movie or Pilot (Supporting Young Actress)".
Duff's first serious shot at fame came when she was cast as one of the children in the pilot episode of the NBC sitcom Daddio (2000). Actor Michael Chiklis, co-star of Daddio stated, "After working with her the first day, I remember saying to my wife, 'This young girl is going to be a movie star'. She was completely at ease with herself and comfortable in her own skin."[5]

Lizzie McGuire

Before Daddio had aired, Duff was dropped from its cast lineup and became reluctant to continue her acting career. Her manager and mother spurred her on, and a week later she successfully auditioned for the family comedy show Lizzie McGuire. In the series Duff portrayed a clumsy but average middle school girl. The show focused on her life and her slow growth into teenhood. Actors that starred alongside her included Lalaine, Adam Lamberg, Jake Thomas, Clayton Snyder, Ashlie Brillault, Robert Carradine, and Hallie Todd.
Lizzie McGuire, which first aired on the Disney Channel in January 12, 2001, was a ratings hit, drawing in 2.3 million viewers per episode,[5] and became the career breakthrough Duff had been waiting for. Her participation in the show led to her becoming highly popular among children between the ages of seven and fourteen, with critic Richard Huff of the New York Daily News calling her "a 2002 version of Annette Funicello."[5] After Duff fulfilled her entire sixty-five episode contract with Lizzie McGuire, Disney considered continuing the franchise in further films and a prime-time television series to be broadcast on ABC, but the plans deteriorated. A successful feature film spin-off, The Lizzie McGuire Movie (2003), was produced.

Other projects

During her time on Lizzie McGuire, Duff starred opposite Christy Carlson Romano and Gary Cole in the Disney Channel television film Cadet Kelly (2002), which became the network's most watched program in its nineteen-year history.[5]
Duff has made several guest appearances in television shows, her first as a sick child in the medical drama Chicago Hope in March 2000.[6] In a 2003 episode of George Lopez, she had a role as a makeup salesperson, and she later reappeared in the show in 2005 as a feminist poet friend of Carmen (Masiela Lusha), a character whose poetry had roots in the work of Simone de Beauvoir, Toril Moi, and Ranjit Hakim. She acted opposite her sister Haylie as the 1960s pop group The Shangri-Las in American Dreams in 2003, and played a classmate and idolizer of the title character of Joan of Arcadia in a 2005 episode. During her Most Wanted tour, she performed in Guadalajara, Mexico, where she filmed a brief appearance on the soap opera Rebelde. She was also the guest star on The Andy Milonakis Show for its third season premiere in 2007.[7]

Film career

Duff's first role in a theatrical motion picture was in Human Nature (2002), an independent film shot before Lizzie McGuire and first shown at the Cannes and Sundance film festivals.[8] Written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Michel Gondry, the film follows a female naturalist, played by Patricia Arquette. Duff played the younger version of Arquette's character.

2003–2004

Her first major role in a feature film was in the family action film Agent Cody Banks with Frankie Muniz in 2003. The film received positive reviews and was successful enough to spawn a sequel, in which Duff did not participate. Afterwards, Duff reprised her role as Lizzie McGuire for The Lizzie McGuire Movie, which exceeded box office expectations earning $55,534,455 worldwide.[9]

Later that year Duff played one of the twelve children of Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt in the family film Cheaper by the Dozen, which remains her highest grossing film. She reprised her role in the sequel to the film called Cheaper by the Dozen 2 (2005), which failed to be as financially successful as the original film and was panned by critics.
In 2004, Duff starred in the romantic comedy A Cinderella Story, an update of Charles Perrault's fairy tale Cinderella. The film became a moderate box office hit, and though reviews were mostly negative, some critics were impressed by Duff's performance and her chemistry with co-star Chad Michael Murray. A Cinderella Story earned $66,068,046 worldwide and was a commercial success.[10] Later that year she starred in the film Raise Your Voice, her first starring role in a drama film. Some critics praised Duff for appearing in a more dramatic role than previously, but the film was heavily panned, with the Las Vegas Weekly writing: "Effortlessly combining Duff's bad acting and bad singing with bad writing and bad direction, Raise Your Voice is an insulting waste of time that begs to be silenced." Several reviews were negative to Duff's vocals (several critics pointed out what appears to be her digitally enhanced voice)[11][12][13][14] and indifferent towards her acting performance. The film received a muted reception at the box office, and is Duff's least successful film commercially, with total theater receipts of just $13,573,284.[15] Duff received her first Razzie nomination for worst actress for her roles in Raise Your Voice and Cinderella Story'.[16]

2005–2006

In The Perfect Man (2005), she played the oldest daughter of a divorced woman (Heather Locklear), who moves to New York City as she desperately searches for love. Reviews were mostly negative and the film disappointed at the box office, grossing $19,770,475 globally.[17] That year, Duff was again nominated for a Razzie Award, for both The Perfect Man and Cheaper by the Dozen 2.[18] The 2006 satirical comedy Material Girls, in which she co-starred with her sister Haylie, also disappointed, grossing only $14,189,525 worldwide.[19] The Martha Coolidge-directed film, co-produced by Madonna's independent film production company Maverick Entertainment, starred the Duffs as wealthy siblings who must fight to reclaim their fortune following a scandal. For the film, Hilary was nominated for another two Razzie awards.[20]

2007

The Duff sisters are due to lend their voices to the computer animated comedy Foodfight!, which Lions Gate Films is to distribute in 2007. The film's director, Larry Kasanoff, said that he is "absolutely thrilled to have the Duff sisters as part of the cast."[21] Duff is currently slated to star opposite John Cusack in War, Inc., due for release in late 2007.

Music career

2002–2004

In 2002, Duff recorded a cover of Brooke McClymont's "I Can't Wait" for the original television soundtrack for Lizzie McGuire, and "The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room" for the first DisneyMania compilation album.

Duff's 2003 album, Metamorphosis.
Her first album was Santa Claus Lane (2002), a collection of Christmas songs that included duets with Lil' Romeo, Christina Milian, and her sister Haylie. Accompanied by the Disney Channel-only single "Tell Me a Story (About the Night Before)", it reached the lower half of the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart and was certified gold.[22] The track "Santa Claus Lane was included on the soundtrack to The Santa Clause 2 and another song, "What Christmas Should Be", was used in Cheaper by the Dozen. Duff sang several tracks for the 2003 soundtrack to The Lizzie McGuire Movie (see The Lizzie McGuire Movie (soundtrack)), including "Why Not", which became a top twenty hit in Australia.

Duff's second album and first studio album, Metamorphosis (2003), reached number one on the U.S. and Canadian charts. It became one of the biggest selling albums of the year in the U.S. and has since gone to sell over 3.7 million copies.[23] The lead single, "So Yesterday" (co-written and produced by The Matrix), was a top ten hit in several countries and its music video received heavy airplay on MTV; its follow-up, the Laguna Beach theme song "Come Clean", became Duff's first top forty U.S. hit[24] and reached the top twenty elsewhere. The third single, "Little Voice", was not released in the U.S. and was a minor hit in Canada and Australia. In late 2003, Duff embarked on her first concert tour, the Metamorphosis Club Tour, and later the Most Wanted tour. Most shows in the major cities included on the tour were sold out [25].
The second DisneyMania disc, DisneyMania 2, was released in January 2004 and contained a duet with her sister, "The Siamese Cat Song". Another song, "Circle of Life", featured Duff and other Disney Channel stars. Duff and her sister recorded a cover of The Go-Gos' "Our Lips Are Sealed" for the soundtrack to A Cinderella Story, which included two other songs by Duff. The video for "Our Lips Are Sealed" was popular on MTV's TRL, but the song failed to chart on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.[24]

Duff co-wrote tracks on her third album, the self-titled Hilary Duff, which she said had an edgier, rock feel than Metamorphosis. It was released on her seventeenth birthday (in September 2004) and debuted at number two in the U.S. and at number one in Canada. The album sold over 1.5 million copies in the U.S. in eight months,[23] but its only U.S. single, "Fly", failed to chart on the Hot 100,[24] despite being accompanied by a popular video. "Fly" reached the top forty in Australia, where the album produced a second top forty single, "Someone's Watching over Me" [26], which was the theme song of the film Raise Your Voice. Duff contributed the song "(I'll Give) Anything but Up!" for the 2004 album Marlo Thomas & Friends: Thanks & Giving All Year Long (2004), before continuing nine more months of the Most Wanted Tour.

Duff's fourth album, Most Wanted (2005), comprised her favorite tracks from her previous two albums, remixes, and new songs inspired by pop-rock musicians such as The Killers and Muse. Duff stated that it was not a greatest hits album, but that her label told her it was time to release a new album. She had more creative control over Most Wanted compared to her previous releases, co-writing the new material with producers Joel Madden and his brother, Benji, both of the band Good Charlotte. The lead single, "Wake Up", became Duff's highest peaking single on the U.S. Hot 100 at the time,[24] and its video received heavy rotation on MTV. The video for the second single, "Beat of My Heart", was also popular, but the single itself did not chart in the U.S.[24] The album itself debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 [27] and became her third number-one debut in Canada. An Italy-only compilation, 4Ever, was released in 2006. Duff recorded new songs for her Madonna-produced film Material Girls, including a Timbaland-produced cover version of Madonna's "Material Girl" with her sister.[28]

2007

For Duff's third studio album, Dignity, she co-wrote material with Kara DioGuardi, who co-produced the album with Rhett Lawrence, Richard "Humpty" Vission, Tim & Bob and others. Duff said that compared to her previous music it would be "more dancey" and make use of more real instruments. "I don't know exactly how to explain what we're doing, but it's fun and funky and different, something new for me. It's really cool", she said.[29] She has also described the album's sound as "a little less pop-rock and more electronic-sounding".[30]

Duff on the red carpet at the 2007 MuchMusic Video Awards.

The first single, "Play with Fire", became a minor club hit but failed to chart in the U.S.; the second single, "With Love", was more successful, becoming Duff's biggest U.S. Hot 100 hit and topping the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart.[24] The music video for "With Love" was used as the commercial for Duff's first fragrance, With Love... Hilary Duff, which was launched in September 2006; the video reached number one on Total Request Live. Initially slated for release in late 2006,[31] the album was released in April 2007 in North America and earlier elsewhere. It reached the top five in the U.S. and Canada, the top twenty in Australia and the top forty in the UK. A tour in support of the album is scheduled. The third single from the album is "Stranger".
Entrepreneurship
Duff launched a clothing line, Stuff by Hilary Duff, in March 2004, with clothes distributed through Target in the United States, Kmart in Australia, Zellers in Canada and Edgars in South Africa. The company started out as a clothing line but has expanded to furniture, fragrances, and jewelry and it is aimed at the teen and preteen crowd.[32] Playmates Toys released a celebrity doll of her in 2004.[33] In September 2006, Duff released her perfume, With Love... Hilary Duff, which she premiered on The View.[34]
Duff and her pet dog Lola made an appearance in the Electronic Arts game The Sims 2: Pets, which was released on October 2006. In console versions of the game, Duff's character will visit public areas and players will be able to let their sims socialize with her and Lola, the dog. However, in the PC expansion pack, players must download the Duff sim from the Maxis website before December 31 she and her dog will be fully playable characters, rather than a non-player character.[35] Duff, along with celebrities Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson have been criticized for their displaying of the dogs as fashion accessories rather than pets.[36]
Personal life

Duff appeared at MuchMusic in Canada on April 23, 2007 to promote her music.

Duff began dating singer Aaron Carter in 2002. They met on the set of Lizzie McGuire, when Carter had a cameo role on a Christmas episode. The relationship lasted a year and a half. It was reported that Carter left actress Hilary Duff for Lindsay Lohan, then broke up with Lohan and resumed dating Duff. Carter said he also cheated on Duff with her best friend, that Duff "got her heart broken" and that he is "sorry" for his actions.[37] Claymation facsimiles of Duff and Lohan appeared on the celebrity wrestling series Celebrity Death Match on March 23, 2007. Duff and Lindsay Lohan were later reported to have been involved in a "feud" with each other, over their relationship with Carter.[38] As of 2007, Duff and Lohan had reconciled. Lohan attended the release party for Duff's album Dignity and Duff told People magazine that she thought Lohan was "fun" and "a nice girl".[39]
In 2004, reports claimed that Avril Lavigne and Duff were fighting. "I read that I was supposedly mad at my fans for dressing like me," Newsweek quotes Lavigne as saying. "They quoted Hilary Duff saying, 'Avril needs to appreciate her fans more and blah, blah, blah.' I'm like, excuse me? First off, it's not even true. I never said that. And second, who the hell cares what she has to say about my fans? Whatever. Hilary Duff's such a goody-goody, such a mommy's girl." Recently, there were reports of drama between the two at a Maxim party in New York - with a complication in arrival times causing an unwanted run-in. Lavigne was said to be furious, pacing around and pressuring her company to leave.[40]
Duff began dating Good Charlotte singer Joel Madden in 2004.[41] Duff's mother Susan announced their relationship in the June 2005 interview for Seventeen magazine, after a long period of tabloid speculation.[42] In a June 2006 interview with ELLE magazine, Duff stated "...(virginity) is definitely something I like about myself. It doesn't mean I haven't thought about sex, because everyone I know has had it and you want to fit in."[43] Duff later told MuchMusic that she didn't say the quotes attributed to her in the article and that the subject was "definitely not something that I would talk about..."[44] Duff and Madden broke up in November 2006.[45]. Soon after their break up, Madden started to date Nicole Richie. The story reports that though Hilary kept quiet at first but now, she’s lashing out. First, she labeled Joel and Nicole’s relationship a "rebound" and said in the August issue of Seventeen magazine that she "felt disrespected that he moved on so quickly." Then in the new issue of Hollywood Life, she took a jab at his new high-profile lifestyle with Nicole, saying that when she was with Joel, "It would’ve been cheesy to be a couple that just loves to go out and get photographed. So you do wonder why they do it now when they were so against it before?"
In late 2006, Duff took legal action against an alleged stalker and the stalker's roommate.[46] On November 3, 2006, Duff's stalker, Maksim Miakovsky, was arrested for threatening to kill her that weekend. He was booked on charges of making criminal threats and stalking. He came to the U.S. "for the sole purpose of meeting and becoming romantically involved with Ms. Duff." Miakovsky is being held on $200,000 bail at the Manhattan Beach jail. He was arraigned on November 7, 2006.[47] On January 19, 2007 Miakovsky was sentenced to 117 days in jail and five years probation after pleading no contest to the charges, according to the Associated Press.[48]
Duff is involved with several charities, is an animal rights enthusiast, a member of Kids with a Cause,[49] and has donated US$250,000 to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina.[50] In late August 2006, Duff traveled to a New Orleans elementary school and worked with USA Harvest to distribute meals. In 2005, she donated over 2.5 million meals to Hurricane Katrina victims in the south.[51]
In August 2005, Duff said she received veneers because she chipped off one of her front teeth on a microphone during a concert.[52] She subsequently had her veneers redone to match the size of her original teeth.[53][54] By 2005, Duff appeared to have lost weight, leading the media to speculate that she had developed an eating disorder, although Duff has denied this claim.[55] Duff was interviewed on the Australian current affair show Today Tonight and stated that she lost weight by living a more active lifestyle.
Later, an article on Digital Spy stated that in 2006, Duff slimmed down to a U.S. size zero because of the media reporting she had gained fifteen pounds.[56] She said she has been feeling pressure to be thin, stating that she is perceived in the media to be either too fat or too thin. Duff called this "judgmental" and "mean".[57]

WOO WOO WOO- SO ATTRACTIVE

And now, let’s me show you some of her song lyrics:

Come Clean (Remix 2005)

Let's go backBack to the beginningBack to when the earth, the sun, the stars all aligned'Cause perfect didn't feel so perfectTrying to fit a square into a circleWas no lieI defy[CHORUS:]Let the rain fall downAnd wake my dreamsLet it wash awayMy sanity'Cause I wanna feel the thunderI wanna screamLet the rain fall downI'm comimg clean, I'm coming cleanI'm sheddingShedding every colorTrying to find a pigment of truthBeneath my skin'Cause differentDoesn't feel so differentAnd going out is betterThen always staying inFeel the wind[CHORUS]I'm coming cleanLet the rain fallLet the rain fallI'm coming clean[CHORUS]Let's go backBack to the beginning

STRANGER

Nobody believes me when I tell them that you're out of your mind.
Nobody believes me when I tell them that there's so much you hide.
You treat me like a queen when we go out,
wanna show everyone what our love's about.
All wrapped up in me whenever there is a crowd,
But when no ones around;

There's no kindness in your eyes,
he way you look at me, it's just not right.
I can tell whats going on this time,
Theres a stranger in my life.
You're not the person that I once knew.
Are you scared to let them know it's you?
If they could only see you like I do,
Then they would see a stranger too..

Did I ever do anything that was this cruel to you?
Did I ever make you wonder who was standing in the room?
You made yourself look perfect in everyway,
So when this goes down, I'm the one that will be blamed.
Your plan is working so you can just walk away,
Baby your secret's safe.

There's no kindness in your eyes,
he way you look at me, it's just not right.
I can tell whats going on this time,
Theres a stranger in my life.
You're not the person that I once knew.
Are you scared to let them know it's you?
If they could only see you like I do,
Then they would see a stranger too..

Such a long way back, from this place we arrived.
When I think of all the time I've wasted, I could cry..

There's no kindness in your eyes,
he way you look at me, it's just not right.
I can tell whats going on this time,
Theres a stranger in my life.
You're not the person that I once knew.
Are you scared to let them know it's you?
If they could only see you like I do,
Then they would see a stranger too..

There's no kindness in your eyes,
The way you look at me, it's just not right.
I can tell whats going on this time,
Theres a stranger in my life.
You're not the person i once knew.
Are you scared to let them know it's you?
